The Three Great Hierarchs and Ecumenical Teachers:

Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian & John Chrysostom

Fifteenth Sunday of Luke (“Zacchaeus”)

Hieromartyr Hippolytos, Pope of Rome; Virgin-martyr Chrissa of Rome;

New-martyr Theodore of Mitylene; Julian, Priest of Aegina

Thought for Today“The ignorance of Scripture is a great cliff and a deep abyss; to know nothing of the divine laws is a great betrayal of salvation. This has given birth to heresies; this has introduced a corrupt way of life.” + St. John Chrysostom

Dormition Monastery has sent us via the Webbs numerous loaves of tasty organic, artisanal style bread. We will use some for Coffee Hour, and the rest will be available for interested folks to take home from the church on Sunday after services – just outside the side door by the prayer pagoda. Right now it is frozen, and sliced, so you may want to warm it a bit to “freshen” it up.

EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews. (13:7-16)

 (For the Three Hierarchs)

Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God.

Brethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the Word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through His own blood. Therefore, let us go forth to Him outside the camp and bear the abuse He endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city, which is to come. Through Him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His Name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (19:1-10)

(For the Fifteenth Sunday of Luke—“Zacchaeus”)

At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. And he sought to see Who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus, for He was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.

And when they saw it they all murmured, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but  have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 7

Thou didst shatter death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open paradise to the thief; Thou didst turn the sadness of the ointment-bearing women into joy. And didst bid Thine Apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen, O Christ, granting to the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion for Three Hierarchs  – Tone 1

The three most great luminaries of the Three Sun Divinity * have illumined all of the world with the rays of doctrines divine and true; * they are the sweetly-flowing rivers of wisdom, * who with godly knowledge * have watered all creation in clear and mighty streams: * The great and sacred Basil, and the Theologian, wise Gregory, * together with the renowned John, * the famed Chrysostom of golden speech. * Let us all who love their divinely-wise words * come together, honoring them with hymns; * for ceaselessly they offer entreaty for us to the Trinity.

Kontakion of the Presentation of Christ – Tone 1

Thou, O Christ God, Who by Thy Birth, didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb, and, as is meet, didst bless Simeon’s arms, and didst also come to save us; preserve Thy fold in wars, and confirm them whom Thou didst love, for Thou alone art the Lover of mankind.

Thirty-first Sunday after Pentecost

Fourteenth Sunday of Luke

Hieromartyr Clement, bishop of Ancyra

Martyr Agathangelos; Paulinos, Bishop of Nola

Thought for Today“Give man everything which he desires, and he will enjoy it for a while, but afterwards he will become indifferent to it, because he feels that something else, much more elevated, is missing. Is it not in that way that the child, too, enjoys every new toy until it grows hungry?  Then he abandons the toy and looks for food. A certain inextinguishable inner hunger for truth, joy, and peace in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17) torments our soul and does not give us peace, even among the best pleasures of life and among the most enviable achievements in the world. This blessed hunger is a hunger for God.”

Orthodoxy 101 will resume  in February on Wednesday evenings.

Feast of the Presentation of our Lord in the Temple on February 2nd.

EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to St. Timothy. (1:15-17)

O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance.

Unto Thee have I cried, O Lord, my God.

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display His perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in Him for eternal life. To the King of Ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory to the ages of ages. Amen.

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:35-43)

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to Him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Resurrection Apolytikion – Tone 6

When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb. And the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of St. Clement of Ancyra  – Tone 4

Thou didst blossom forth for the faithful, O most sacred Clement, as a branch of holiness, a staff of contest, a most sacred flower, and a sweet God-given fruit. But as a fellow-sufferer of martyrs and a fellow-prelate of hierarchs, intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

Kontakion of the Presentation of Christ – Tone 1
