Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 8

From the heights Thou didst descend, O compassionate One, and Thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that Thou might deliver us from passion; Thou art our life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of St. Barbara – Tone 8

Let us honor Saint Barbara, for she hath broken the snares of the enemy; and like a sparrow, she, the all-modest maiden, was delivered out of them by the help and weapon of the Cross.

Apolytikion of St. John of Damascus _ Tone 3

O ye faithful come, let us on this day * laud with praise the sweet-sounding nightingale * that adorned and captivated the Church of Christ * with his sweet songs and tuneful, heav’nly hymns, * he is the all-wise and eloquent John Damascene, * the utmost chief of hymnographers, and a man of God * who was filled with every earthly and divine wisdom.

Kontakion of Prepation of Christ’s Nativity -Tone 3

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

  EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Epistle

God is wondrous in His saints. Bless God in the congregations.

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. (3:23-4:5)

Brethren, before faith came, we were confined under the Law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed.  So that the Law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.  I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father.  So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe.  But when the time had fully come, God sent forth His Son, to redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

The Gospel

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (13:10-17)

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.  And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.  And when Jesus saw her, He called her and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.”  And He laid His hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God.  But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”  Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrite!  Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead it away to water it?  And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”  As Jesus said this, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by Him.

Receiving the Eucharist:We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Resurrectional Apolytikion -Tone 7

Thou didst shatter death by Thy Cross, Thou didst open paradise to the thief; Thou didst turn the sadness of the ointment-bearing women into joy. And didst bid Thine Apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen O Christ, granting to the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of St. James the Persian -Tone 4

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee * received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. * For, since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants * and wholly destroyed the demons’ strengthless presumption. * O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Kontakion of the Preparation of Christ’s Nativity -Tone 3

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

  EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Epistle

The Lord will give strength to His people.

Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of God, ascribe to the Lord honor and glory.

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. (2:14-22)

Brethren, Christ is our peace, Who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the Cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end.  And He came and preached peace to you, who were far off, and peace to those who were near; for through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.  So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in Whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in Whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

The Gospel

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:18-27)

At that time, a man came testing Jesus and asking, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good?  No one is good but God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery. Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother.’”  And the man said, “All these I have observed from my youth.”  And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, “One thing you still lack.  Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”  But when the man heard this he became sad, for he was very rich.  Jesus, seeing him sad, said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!  For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”  Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?”  Jesus said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”

Hat and Glove Donation: As is our tradition, we collect child-size winter hats and gloves; donations are given to area schools to distribute to the children.

Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost

Forefeast of the Entrance of the Theotokos

Venerable Gregory of Decapolis; Proclos, patriarch of Constantinople; wonderworker Sozomen of Cyprus

Thought for Today: “There are two kinds of fasting: inner and outward fasting. The first is the safeguarding of our vision, hearing, and all our feelings from all bad and impure things; the second is the abstinence from certain kinds of food. Both of them are insepartable from one another. Some people pay attention only to the putward fasting and do not comprehend the inner fasting at all.”   + St. Barsanuphius of Optina+

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 6

When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb; and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of the Forefeast of the Entrance – Tone 4

By blossoming forth the only Ever-virgin as fruit, * today holy Anna doth betroth us all unto joy, instead of our former grief; * on this day she doth fulfill her vows to the Most High, * leading her with joy into the Lord’s holy temple, * who truly is the temple and pure Mother of God the Word.

Kontakion if the Forefeast of the Entrance –Tone 4

The whole world is filled today * with joy and gladness * on the Theotokos’ * auspicious and resplendent feast, * whereon with great voice it crieth out: * The heavenly tabernacle is she in truth.

EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Epistle

O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.

Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry, O my God.

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. (2:4-10)

Brethren, God, being rich in mercy, through His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead through the trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved—and raised us up together with Him, and made us to sit together with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages He would show the exceeding riches of His grace, in kindness toward us, in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith, and that is not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

The Gospel

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (12:16-21)

The Lord spoke this parable: “The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘Fool!  This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” As He said this, Jesus called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

All Saints parish welcomes you to join our annual Thanksgiving meal in the Fellowship Hall at 2:00 p.m., Thanksgiving Day.  Fasting rules are suspended for the Thanksgiving Feast, by standing order of the Archdiocese.

Please Read: Each Sunday this fall I will be including a brief teaching on etiquette in Church. These are not meant to be “laws,” but rather instructions on a good and proper way to orient ourselves toward Christ in His holy Church. Perhaps the most important thing to be emphasized here is that we are to look at where I, myself, may fall short and need improvement, and not focus on my neighbor (Matt. 7:3-5). Thank you for reading.

Love, Fr. Peter Jon

Church EtiquetteHoly Bread: All parishioners and visitors are welcome to receive a piece of Prosfora (holy bread) from the wooden bowls held at the front of the church at communion and dismissal. Parents, please limit your children to a single piece after communion, to ensure there is enough for everyone. Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 5

Let us believers praise and worship the Word; coeternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation. For, He took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh to suffer death; and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection

Apolytikion of St. John Chrysostom – Tone 8

Grace shining forth from thy mouth like fire hath enlightened the universe, and disclosed to the world treasures of uncovetousness, and shown us the heights of humility. But as thou dost instruct us by thy words, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede with the Word, Christ our God, to save our souls.

The sacred treasury of God’s holy glory, * the greatly precious bridal chamber and Virgin, * the Savior’s most pure temple, free of stain and undefiled, * into the House of the Lord * on this day is brought forward * and bringeth with herself the grace * of the Most Divine Spirit; * her do God’s Angels hymn with songs of praise, * for she is truly the heavenly tabernacle.

  EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Epistle

My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

Hear this, all ye people.

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews. (7:26-8:2)

Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a High Priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; He did this once for all when He offered up Himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son Who has been made perfect forever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a High Priest, one Who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.

The Gospel

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:25-37)

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law?  How do you read?”  And the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”  And Jesus said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.”  But the lawyer, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”  Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead.  Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side.  So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’  Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”  The lawyer said, “The one who showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Church Etiquette:  We worship together as a family; children belong in church, and under the guidance of their parents. Yes, kids make noise (it’s what they do) and it is beautiful to see them learn to pray and sing according to their level of ability.  If it becomes necessary, feel free to escort your child out of the Nave to calm down and then return to worship. Children are never to linger unattended in the kitchen, hall, restrooms or nursery. Likewise, they should not be unsupervised on the playground, in the woods or in the pavilion.

Thought for Today: “The merciful person is he who gives to others what he himself received from God, whether it be money, or food, or strength, a helpful word, a prayer, or anything else he has through which he can express his compassion for those in need.”  – St. Peter of Damascus

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 4

Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel the women disciples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation. And proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying: Death hath been spoiled; Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of St. Paul the Confessor – Tone 3

Thy confession of the one divine Faith * showed thee to the Church to be a new Paul * and a zealot among priests, O holy one. * The righteous blood both of Abel and Zachary * with thee doth cry out together unto the Lord. * Righteous Father, intercede with Christ God in our behalf * that His Great Mercy may be granted unto us.

   EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Epistle

O Lord, how magnified are Thy works.  In wisdom hast Thou made them all.

Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ.  Even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the Law, because by works of the Law shall no one be justified.  But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin?  Certainly not!  But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the Law died to the Law, that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.

The Gospel

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:41-56)

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet he besought Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.  As Jesus went, the people pressed round Him.  And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased.  And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched Me?”  When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the multitudes surround Thee and press upon Thee!  And Thou sayest, ‘Who touched Me?’”  But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from Me.”  And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.  And Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”  While Jesus was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.”  But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well.”  And when Jesus came to the house, He permitted no one to enter with Him, except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the child.  And all were weeping and bewailing her; but Jesus said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.”  And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.  But taking her by the hand Jesus called, saying, “Child, arise.”  And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and Jesus directed that something should be given her to eat.  And her parents were amazed; but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Love, Fr. Peter Jon

Church Etiquette: Posture and Lipstick:  It is our tradition to stand during worship as much as you are able, with hands at your side or folded at the waist in front of you. But sit when you need to. It isn’t proper to put your hands in your pockets or fold your arms at your chest or behind your back. We must remember that we are in the throne room of the Almighty God, and that our physical posture both reflects and affects our spiritual posture.  Also, ladies, please remove lipstick before venerating icons, the Gospel, kissing the holy Chalice, or any other holy object.
