Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican

Venerable Timothy of Symbola; Eustathios, Archbishop of Antioch; Zachariah, Patriarch of Jerusalem; George, Bishop of Amastris

We warmly welcome you to All Saints

in the Name of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ!

Nourishment of the Soul: “To deny oneself means to give up one’s bad habits; to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad thoughts or desires; to suppress every evil thought; not to desire to do anything out of self love, but to do everything out of love for God.”
St. Innocent of Alaska

Dear All Saints family, we would like to thank you for supporting the campers last Sunday. With your generous donations the cost was significantly reduced! Please know that the kids look forward to this camp all year long and come home with an invigorated love for the church.  Lilly, Molly, John, and Nicholas, along with their parents, are so grateful! Thank you so much! Lisa Alexander ($808 was collected!)

O101: Fr. Peter Jon will continue with the series “Practical Orthodoxy, Part 2” on Wednesday, February 24th  at 6:45 after Daily Vespers.

New Class starts today after Divine Liturgy: Adrian Polit will lead students ages 12-18 in a study in the Teen Barn.  Parents, please encourage your kids to gather to learn more about the Faith.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Bread Bakers Needed: If you want to learn, let the Barretts know.  5  loaves are needed each Sunday.  Great Lent and Holy Week  require even more! Thank you to our existing and new bakers for using your talents to serve Christ and His Holy Church.

Announcement: Please remember in your prayers Shelly & the child she bears (Anastasia Hope), husband Chris, and their children. The Connells are friends of Fr. Peter and Kh. Kristina whose unborn daughter has been diagnosed with a serious condition and is not expected to survive long after birth.  Pray that our most merciful Lord will grant the Connells strength and solidarity as a family, support for their grief, wisdom for their care team, and most of all, the Peace that surpasses all understanding.  May we remember the Lord Who calls us out of nothingness into being, and wills that we reflect His love with the boundless courage of  the saints.

Liturgy for Saturday of Souls: Plan now to forward your lists to Fr. Peter Jon by Friday, March 4th so he will have them as he prepares for Saturday’s  liturgy on March 5th. Divide your list into Orthodox and Non-Orthodox Departed. Sheets are available, but you may also e-mail Father.*

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Make your vows and pay them to the Lord our God.”

Verse: “God is known in Judaea; His Name is great in Israel!”

Psalm 75:10,1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Second Epistle to  Timothy.  (3:10-15)

My Child Timothy,  you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, persecutions, sufferings, what things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra.  What persecutions I endured! And out of them all the Lord delivered me.  Indeed all who would live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.  But people who are wicked and deceivers will proceed from worse to worse, deceiving and being deceived.  But as for you, continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and how from infancy you have known the sacred temple writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:10-14)

The Lord spoke this parable: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Divine Liturgy Variables

 Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 5

Let us believers praise and worship the Word; co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation. For, He took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh to suffer death; and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection.

Kontakion for The Pharisee and Publican – Tone 4

Let us flee the Pharisee’s conceited vaunting; let us learn the Publican’s humility, and cry with groans unto the Savior: Thou Who alone art swiftly reconciled, be gracious unto us.
